Cat #34721

Cat #34721
Wedgetail Eagle and Powerline.
Digital media on Facebook by Michael McDonald.

The artist claims to be influenced by Rothko, but I am thinking there is a more subtle influence by, and not a little antipathetic reaction to, the more mathematically precise Mondrian. I am particularly impressed with McDonald’s refusal to be constrained by the edges of the page. The non parallelity of the power line is breathtaking in its artistic arrogance, while the obfuscatory placing of the eagle is nothing less than evidence of the artist’s superlative genius.

The metaphysical imagery is further enhanced when it is appreciated that due to parallax, the Eagle (A metaphor for the artist – or for mankind?) is actually soaring high above the power line and also is unconstrained.

Though I am old with wandering Through hollow lands and hilly lands, I will find out where she has gone, And kiss her lips and take her hands; And walk among long dappled grass, And pluck till time and times are done, The silver apples of the moon, The golden apples of the sun.
