When I Was Young and Foolish

When I was young and foolish

I lived without a thought

From day to day and play to play

What’s easy comes to naught

.

When I was young and foolish

I worked when ere I could

My heart was spent, my back was bent

Yet I had done no good

.

When I was young and foolish

I loved without reserve

I gave and gave, and I received

What I did not deserve

.

When I was young and foolish

My motives were obscure

The good I did, the bad I hid

Which is which, now, I’m not sure

.

When I was young and foolish

I still wonder why

What is with me, that I shall be

Young and foolish ‘til I die

Though I am old with wandering Through hollow lands and hilly lands, I will find out where she has gone, And kiss her lips and take her hands; And walk among long dappled grass, And pluck till time and times are done, The silver apples of the moon, The golden apples of the sun.
