Lockdown Diary (cont.)

The lockdown is easing. From the weekend I can take the boat out.

In the meantime I’ve been pondering the mysteries of the universe. Such as the origins of life, and the possibility of life elsewhere.

It just seems so odd to me that it cannot be coincidence. I mean, that life just happened to evolve on the very same planet that we live on. I mean, what are the odds of that?

The Possibility of Life in the Universe
This lecture by Carl Sagan was delivered in 1979 to a packed university auditorium in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It reflects the science of that time, and in the Q&A Dr. Sagan addresses the related claim that not only is there definitive proof for the existence of Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence in the cosmos, ETIs have visited Earth. Dr. Sagan’s exquisite deconstruction of such claims is a classic exercise in skeptical and critical thinking.

Though I am old with wandering Through hollow lands and hilly lands, I will find out where she has gone, And kiss her lips and take her hands; And walk among long dappled grass, And pluck till time and times are done, The silver apples of the moon, The golden apples of the sun.

  1. Bugger the universe – I too can now go out in my boat – well, kayak. Spent the morning redoing all my saltwater rigs – this glorious autumn weather continues. I am spoilt for choice, out on the harbor for snapper and kahawai or up the river for some lovely pink fleshed trout.
